Police harassment is so funny

Please remember, hip white young things of the internet:

While you were laughing at police officers joking about how hard it is to harass people in Palmerston North …

Police in Upper Hutt were strip-searching teenagers who didn’t even match the descriptions of their suspects and denying them access to legal counsel.

Ha ha ha, police harassment is so fucking funny, isn’t it?  Gosh, why do those people of colour distrust the police, they’re just here to help us, right?

H/T NRT.

Wait, what? We’re not allowed to laugh at something that was obviously meant to be funny, not serious? Everything Police realted has to be super fucking serious now?

The treatment of those two girls is terrible, there’s no arguing that. But it’s not like the police came out and made fun of it. Or joked about it. To quote from the article you linked to: ‘Upper Hutt area commander Inspector Mike Hill said he stood by his words describing the handling of the investigation and the action of staff as an “aberration”‘

But no. Remove the tiny bit of humour in a pretty much thankless job. Find a horrible reason to revoke the little bit of fun one officer had, and the few laughs we had with him. Feel really fucking proud, ha ha fucking ha.

    Andrew.

      You sound white.

No, seriously though, good point. We clearly have no culture of NZ Police harassing people for no good reason, so joking about something which is abhorrent is okay.

Or wait, no, it looks like we do have a culture of NZ Police harassing people for no good reason, so joking about people abusing their power is not okay. I should write a post about that. OH NO, I DID THAT. What the fuck was your “point” again?

You sound maori. (Wow, that really is hilarious! Or wait, no, it is actually REALLY fucking horrid and pathetic, dressed up to look smug!)

My point was simply that given the size of the NZ Police force, I find it hard to believe that every_single_one_of_time is a horrid, soulless piece of shit. That maybe it’s OK for them to be allowed a laugh every now and then, even if the material being laughed at relates to their job.

But no, it seems that’s not the case. I will hence-forth subscribe to your matra that they’re not allowed any fun at all, it all has to be super serious.

But you’re right though. I’m white, I’m male, I’m ~35 and have a full time job (not at all police related, though.) I trust that helps you to judge me, even though you don’t know me and regardless of my comments. Which funnily enough, seems to be similar to what you accuse every police officer of doing.

Wow, you’ve really opened my eyes, Andrew. I’ll take back what I said about all police officers being “horrid, soulless pieces of shit”, just as soon as I figure out where I’ve ever said that.

While I’m working on that, you might like to check out basic concepts like privilege and ask yourself why the concept of police brutality has its own Wikipedia page. No, you’re right, it’s probably a feminist killjoy plot. Instead, you could brush up on the basic reality of our problematic Police culture. Even The Herald knows it exists.

To quote from the article you linked to: ‘Upper Hutt area commander Inspector Mike Hill said he stood by his words describing the handling of the investigation and the action of staff as an “aberration”‘

That was no aberration. There’s no way you screw two people over that badly by mistake.

      • QoT

Hey now, Draco, per the story: “Both arresting officers were probationary officers who had little experience.”

So it’s just that they weren’t properly trained, weren’t properly supervised, and both had somehow mysteriously picked up a belief that they could judge young women of colour based on their race and family affiliations. Sounds like a total oopsie to me and nothing involving further investigation at all.

One thing I dislike is the proportion of NZ walloppers who wear skinheads with pride. If they don’t want to be thought of a bunch of racist thugs they would do well to not allow their colleagues to present themselves as such.

Ever seen a cop with dreads ?

Consider the Kapiti mob: continually looking the other way as brown kids are murdered over their own back fence, and then only raising a manslaughter charge in the case where the victim ran for 300 metres to escape. The pursuit by the offender demonstrates intent. The failure to raise a murder charge has the appearance of conspiracy to defeat the course of justice.

I think the lack of cops wearing dreadlocks is not entirely equivalent to white supremacists wearing skinheads.
